Australasia groups together the continent or island of Australia with New Zealand, Tasmania and the smaller islands around them, all of which lie in the region between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, South East of the Continent of Asia-hence the name Austral or South Asia.

Australia is the largest island upon the surface of the world. It is divided into three parts.
The North was first seen by Pedro Fernandes de Quiro and Luis Vaez de Torres in 1605-1607.
In 1642 Tasman discovered Von Dieman's land, which was believed to be a part of Australia.
Captain Cook in his three voyages discovered the eastern coast which he called New South Wales.

A Map of the East Indies from A New Voyage Round the World, by William Dampier, a buccaneer.He spent nine weeks on the west coast of Australia during his first voyage and is considered to be the first Englishman to go there. He wrote "New Holland is a very large tract of land. It is not yet determined whether it is an island or a main continent; but I am certain that it joyns neither to Asia, Africa, nor America. Printed for James Knapton in 1697. This map is from the 1703 edition.
