An Insect is a small invertebrate animal usually with a body in three segments, head, thorax, abdomen, six legs on thorax, and 2 or 4 wings.
Cats is 'dogs' and rabbits is 'dogs' and so's Parrats,
but this 'ere 'Tortis' is a insect, and there ain't no charge for it.
Punch vol.1vi, p96. 1869
Insecta is synonymous with Aristotle's term Entoma, meaning the body is cut into and divided into numerous segments
Insects fly, walk, leap, swim, dive, mine into the earth, bore into wood, build structures which astonish us with their instinctive reasoning
Insects furnish us with silk, wax, honey, cochineal. Some are eaten by various tribes, others are food for mammals, birds, reptiles and fishes, and the carnivorous of their own class.
Some are remarkable for their beauty, for splendour of colouring, for gracefulness and delicacy.
