From the period of the Conquest of the Byzantine Empire in 1453 to the Treaty of Sèvres in 1920, the Ottoman Empire consisted of European and Asian Turkey.
Turkey in Europe
Turkey in Europe consisted of 195,000 square miles of territories in the northern mediterranean and Balkans, with a population in 1820 of 8 million people. Its chief towns were as follows:
Constantinople, now called Istambul
Adrianople, on the banks of the Marissa
Sophia, on the banks of the River Bogana (now Bulgaria)
Belgrade, above the junction of the rivers Save and Danube (now Serbia)
Bucharest, on the river Dembrowitza which runs into the Danube (now Rumania)
Jassy, near lake Baklui
Thessalonika, now Salonika
Athens, now capital of Greece
Larissa, on the river Peneus, capital of Thessaly
Joannina, near Mount Pindus (once the residence of Ali Pasha)
Turkey in Asia
Turkey in Asia consisted of 494,290 square miles, encompassing most of what is now called the Middle East, with a population in 1820 of 12 million people. Its chief towns were as follows:
Jerusalem, ancient capital of Judea (now Israel)
Aleppo, on river Heylan (Armenia and Diarbekir)
Damascus, on river Pharpar (Syria)
Hamah, on the banks of the Orontes between Aleppo and Damascus.
Baghdad, near the junction of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates (now Iraq)
Erzerum, (Armenia)
Angora
Bursa, at the foot of mount Olympus
Mosul, near the ancient Nineveh (now in Iraq)
Turkish dominions in Africa stretched from the frontiers of Tunis, along the western shore of the Red Sea to the frontier of Abysinia, inland to Tripoli, Fezzan, Barca, and Egypt. They also included sea ports on the coast of the Mediterean, such as Tyre, Sidon, Jaffa, Acre, Tripoli, Caesaria and Scanderoon.
In the Treaty of Sèvres, large chunks of Asia Minor were ceded to France, Italy and Greece. However the Turks, led by Kemal Pasha (later called Ata Turk) developed a new national spirit, and France and Italy decided to abandon their spheres and made peace in 1921. Soviet Russia made an alliance with Kemal. Only the Greeks, with promises of help, hung on until the massacre at Smyrna in 1922.
