About antique romantic prints

Romance. Vernacular language of old France (or old Provence, Spain, etc) developed from Latin.

When I behold upon the night’s starr’d face, Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance, Then on the shore Of the wide world I stand alone, and think Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.

John Keats 1795-1821

John Boydell (1719-1804) established the Boydell Shakespeare Gallery in 1786. He was an engraver, print seller and even became the Lord Mayor of London in 1790. The Boydell Shakespeare Folio adapted from paintings shown at the gallery was published from 1791-1803. Boydell obtained the assistance of the most eminent painters and engravers of the day including Robert Smirke and Boydell’s nephew and business partner Josiah Boydell. The engraving from the Merchant of Venice is an example.

A.H.Payne was a painter, engraver and illustrater in Leipzig. In 1845 he founded the Verlag Englische Kunstantstald, which was one of the first companies in the Printing industry. It continued as the Payne -Verlag to modern times. There are example like The Garland of Fruit by P.P.Rubens, and the the self portrait of Angelika Kauffman. These were engraved from Berlin and its Treasures published in 1854.
