Environs D’Athens from ‘Voyage du Jeune Anacharsis en Grece’ by Abbe Barthelemy. This publication documents Travels of the Young Anacharsis in the middle of the Fourth century before Christianity. Barbie du Bocage, the cartographer and cosmographer, provided the maps which are edited and engraved by Ambroise Tardieu.
This beautiful plan shows the countryside surrounding Athens, and in particular the ancient ports of Piraeus and Phalerum and the ‘long-walls’ that connected them to Athens. These walls provided a secure connection to the sea, even during times of siege.
Copper plate engraving, printed by Jules Didot, published by E.A.Lequien, 1824.
