Garcinia, Clusiaceae, Malpighiales 1800
The fruit looks like a small pumpkin, and is green to pale yellow in colour. The extract of the fruit is called hydroxycitric acid. It is native to Asia, Australia, tropical and southern Africa, and Polynesia.
This is a copper plate, hand coloured engraving by Andrew Bell(1726-1809) engraver to the Prince of Wales. It is from the Encyclopaedia Britannica, or Dictionary of arts, sciences, and miscellaneous literature. Andrew Bell was the co-founder of the Encyclpaedia Britannica, first published between 1768 and 1771 in Scotland. This is from The third edition which was produced between 1788 and 1797, and continued to be printed, for many years.
