Guaiacum officinale, Lignum Vitae. Ornamental evergreen tree with very heavy solid wood. In the 16th century it was used to treat Syphilis. The resin from the wood is now used for medicinal purposes. It is a mild laxative and diuretic, and is useful for relieving pain and inflammation in Rheumatoid Arthritis.
