The copper plate engraving is by J.Moffat showing layout of flower beds.
This engraving is from the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia conducted by David Brewster with the assistance of gentlemen eminent in science and literature. The Edinburgh Encyclopaedia was in direct competition to the Edinburgh-published Encyclopædia Britannica. The Edinburgh Encyclopaedia is stronger
on scientific topics, where many of the articles were written by the editor. It is Edited by David Brewster (1781-1868) and published by William Blackwood in 1830.

    Humbolt’s Distribution of Plants, 1854

    Full title “Humbolt’s Distribution of Plants in Equinoctial America, according to elevation above the level of the sea” is a beautiful pictorial representation showing Chimborazo in Ecuador with a cross section of the plants surveyed in 1802. Engraved by George Aikman and published by A.& C. Black, 1854.
    Alexander von Humbolt (1769-1859) was a Prussian Geographer whose work on Botanical Geography laid the foundation of Bio-geography. He was admired by Darwin, and was friends with Goethe and Schiller.
